The Echo House is located in Ottawa, Canada and was designed by Kariouk Associates. Looking at it, one can scarcely guess that it was originally a 1924 Victorian building, since both the building’s architecture and the interior look so contemporary. However, it certainly does not look like any other contemporary house; it displays a lot of uniqueness and creativity, both from the outside and from the inside.
From the outside, the house looks very simple but cute and unique. It looks like two cubes put together, with a smaller glass cube built into the top of a bigger brick cube. The bigger cube is dark brown while the smaller cube is white. The windows are tall and big, but they do not dominate the walls too much. There is an elliptical window beside the front door, and I think this is a nice touch that balances the straight and angular shapes of the cubes and the windows. Little steps of grey stone slabs are arranged straight from the front door to the street by which the house stands. The ground around the front of the house is covered by green grass, and the house itself is surrounded by many green plants like pine trees, which make the house look even more picturesque.
The inside of the house is even more beautiful and elegant. The walls are almost all white, in contrast with the dark wooden planks that cover the floor. The ceiling is high, making the rooms feel airy and spacious. The big windows add brightness to the rooms. Several cube-shaped rooms cut into the main room, and they seem to be suspended in the air when viewed from the main room, and I think this creates an unusual look which is very creative.
The main bedroom is especially impressive. It takes up an entire floor—the one in the smaller cube, I think. The view from this room is breathtaking, since floor-to-ceiling windows line up two sides of the room. Through them you can see the beautiful view of a lake with pine trees surrounding it. A cushy chair stands by the windows on thick furry carpet, and the bed is big. This is the perfect place for rest—it just feels so peaceful and comfortable.
There is one other room worth mentioning: the book vault. It looks somewhat like a walk-in closet, but it has floor-to-ceiling bookshelves full of books in it, not clothes. This room can not only store your precious book collection, but also protects it. Books are also displayed in various other places in the house, serving as decorations also—yet another creative thing in the design of the house.
