Designed by GAD, this “Buama House” is located in Beykoz, a suburb in Istanbul, Turkey. It has so many personalities, so many different styles that blend together to form this amazing piece of architecture. A part of it looks like it’s taken from a futuristic spaceship, another part from an ancient cave, another from a medieval castle, and yet another from your modern luxurious apartment. That might sound weird or even scary, but this house is neither weird nor scary, this house is simply stunning.
The house is dominated by various shades of brown, which make it look elegant, sophisticated, edgy, and antique at the same time. Both wood planks and stone tiles are used on the floor, and the walls are often textured, whether it’s by the painting technique or by the materials used. The floor, walls, and ceiling curve seamlesslytogether in many of the rooms, creating an illusion of infinite space. Lightings are strategically placed so that they can be functional as well as decorative, highlighting the most interesting parts of the house.
The living room is an example of the parts of the house that look like a modern luxurious apartment. A wide curving sofa, which is light brown and covered in suede, stands facing a stone wall on which flat screen TV hangs. The stone wall is not even, it has some recesses in it that are beautifully lit by white light. Between the sofa and the stone wall is a circular coffee table made of steel and glass, and beside it is a large ottoman. The adjacent dining room, however, feels like a dining room of a medieval castle. It has this rough-hewn wooden table surrounded by ten chairs. An antique-looking cabinet stands beside it, and above it dangles a classic chandelier. We are then transported into a futuristic spaceship when we enter the bathroom. The wall on one side of this bathroom is curved, so it looks like half of the fuselage of a plane. The wall has tiny ceramic tiles on it, and the door into the shower is a square with rounded edges. Another bathroom has steel toilet and washbasin with blue lights under it.
Each part of this house has its own taste and appeal; walking around the house will feel like a discovery or an adventure. You will never get bored in it; on the contrary, you’ll probably be awed forever by it. It is simply the most breathtaking house I have ever seen so far.
